Summary of project activities and outcomes:

The annual WEDC International Conference is a week-long event which includes a two day capacity development programme. Conceived in the early 1970s, the Conference is regularly co-hosted in either Africa or Asia. It is the only conference of its type to be co-organized and hosted in a low- or middle-income country, attracting wide local participation, and providing host countries the opportunity to present their own work in the water and sanitation sector to an international audience, and to build the capacity of their staff.

Sector practitioners and researchers present their papers at the conference and many younger professionals benefit from the paper review process and the range of conference experiences. More than 90 per cent of the delegates come from developing countries – a unique statistic amongst conferences relating to international development.

Over a 40 year period, our conferences have been attended by over 9000 participants from 80 countries. The Conference Proceedings include all papers presented, keynote speeches and summaries from the discussions which take place on each topic. An archive collection of over 2600 papers represents a unique resource for the sector and is available on the WEDC Knowledge Base.
