Summary of project activities and outcomes:

WEDC is providing technical expertise and leadership in research into fecal sludge management (FSM) services, in collaboration with Oxford Policy Management Ltd. Survey tools have been developed and used to diagnose current FSM services at both a city-wide scale and focused on poor urban areas. The analysis of primary data collected in 5 major cities (in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Peru), using a common methodology and analysis framework will lead to development of decision-making tools and guidelines. The project considers multi-components of the enabling environment and service delivery factors that affect both current and future scenarios for FSM services. These include assessment of public health, political economy, demand/supply, economic costs and gains of intervention options. Results aim to support decision-making by governments and donors to invest effectively in FSM services as part of broad urban sanitation improvements.

This demonstrates our expertise for quality research into the multi-factored complexities of urban sanitation, while ensuring a focus on delivering practical and functional tools that city-level decision makers can use to both understand the scale of the current problem and consider options and implications of investing in change.

The final reports and outputs from the research are available on the World Bank website at
