Summary of project activities and outcomes:

Faecal Waste Flow diagrams (more commonly referred to as ‘Shit Flow Diagrams’, SFDs) are a way to clearly and simply show how excreta is or is not contained in urban settings, as it moves along multiple pathways from defecation to disposal or end-use. Working in collaboration with other leading national and international partners, we are developing a set of credible and reliable tools and mechanisms for the easy production of standardized SFDs, backed by a description of information sources and the enabling environment in the city concerned. This research will test the approach and tool to produce SFDs in 50 cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The project aims to promote better understanding of excreta management by demonstrating the power of the SFD in summarizing and presenting what happens to excreta in cities.
