Description

Partners for Water and Sanitation was a not-for profit partnership (gaining charitable status in early 2010) that focused on sharing technical expertise – on a voluntary basis – to build the capacity of the water and sanitation sector in Africa.

Country Managers, working from overseas host organisations (WaterAid and the Department of Water Affairs in South Africa) assessed and matched the demand for skills and advice from African partner organisations with professionals from the UK water sector. UK partners then provided staff on a voluntary basis to share knowledge and technical expertise to support a diverse range of projects.

This unique partnership approach made a real difference in building capacity and strengthening the governance systems necessary to deliver more and better water and sanitation services to all and thereby made a contribution towards the UN Millennium Development Goals for water and sanitation.

Partners for Water and Sanitation connected over a 100 water professionals from at least 23 organisations across the UK with institutions across Africa and brought them together in capacity building partnerships. These links remain and some capacity building work is ongoing through other programmes and initiatives particularly in Ethiopia.

WEDC hosted the PfWS Secretariat, providing Project Manager and Project Administration positions.
