Water Utility Management – Dissemination

WEDC staff involved

Description

This project involved dissemination of activities and outputs of the Sida-funded, WUP managed project entitled "Improvement of water utility management and reduction of unaccounted for water". WEDC led the dissemination effort, supporting the efforts of African water utilities to improve water management and performance, for improved services to all including the poor.

The target audience for dissemination of project outputs comprise water utilities and water sector decision makers.

Services provided by WEDC:
WEDC-based specialists provided water management and knowledge management expertise to African water utilities. Dr Cyrus Njiru and Dr Sam Kayaga (Project Managers) provided water management expertise, with Dr Julie Fisher providing dissemination expertise. Other members of the dissemination team included Andy Larkum (Internet development), Rod Shaw, Kay Davey, Glenda McMahon, Sue Plummer and Karen Betts (publications).

Services provided by partners:
Severn Trent Water International (STWI) and the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) at Loughborough University worked in partnership to jointly provide services to the project.

A three-day regional dissemination conference was held 14-16 November 2005 in Cape Town, South Africa. The three-day event attracted senior water sector professionals from several water utilities in the African continent. Water utility managers presented summaries of their performance improvement plans (PIPs). Apart from water utilities in Africa, all the project partners (WUP, Sida, STWI, and WEDC) were represented, and gave presentations on the project.

Earlier in the month, a half-day dissemination workshop was held on 4 November 2005 in Kampala, Uganda, at the 31st WEDC International Water and Sanitation Conference. This was an important opportunity to learn about:

  • why these improvements were necessary;
  • which management improvements were undertaken and why;
  • how they were achieved;
  • how any difficulties faced by the utilities in implementing the process were overcome; and
  • what were the benefits and improvements that resulted.
